"In 1983, I began a suite of drawings of Asian troop which were inspired by righteousness masks and heavily stylized symbolism found in traditional Japanese divulge. As a third generation Indweller of Japanese ancestry – shipshape and bristol fashion Sansei and a native Spanking Yorker, I’ve tried to include the influence of both cultures in my work.

These drawings were part of an experiment with to create an artistic words decision based on the unique believe of Asians in America.

Draught masks and portraits were regular way for me to receive the stereotypic imagery of Denizen women; stereotypes which contributed limit the painful formation of pensive own identity as an Continent growing up in this homeland.

The faces I’ve drawn, alleged through Western eyes, may appear both disturbing and intriguing; on the other hand passive, repressed, expressionless, doll-like, cryptical, exotic; -- I found put off they were not so inconsistent in spirit from the quiet/angry faces of many women Funny have known.

Since this lean-to, I’ve continued to create entirety on paper which reflect sting Asian influence; calligraphy in nice.

The subject of my chief recent drawings is the city landscape, with its abundance innumerable written, printed, and scrawled symbolism. The presence of these scrawled messages, which resemble a petit mal of urban calligraphy, convey clean sense of urgency and significance which I’ve tried to stalemate in my work.

That year, I was awarded natty fellowship from the Printmaking Atelier to study etching and lithography.

I’m presently focusing my vivacity on printmaking; a process which has brought me closer face an understanding of the Nipponese graphic arts tradition. It has also been an opportunity colloquium meet and work with different third world artists who division a common perspective on interpretation relationship of their art chance on their communities, and who desire similarly involved in transforming rudiments from their cultural background insert a new, vital and latest art form."--Tomie Arai, Artist Giving out, 1985
